What Happened?
- Authorized a Public Hearing on the Acquisition of Certain Land Rights Necessary for the Construction of the Richmond Highway Bus Rapid Transit (RHBRT) Project 2G40-162-000 (Franconia and Mount Vernon Districts)
- Deferred Public Hearing on Proposed Amendments to the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Ordinance. Deferred to 10/08/2024 at 4:00 pm

"No Casino" Coalition Calls for Action
The goal of the coalition is to stop casino development in Fairfax County.
|
Additionally, they are seeking volunteers: 1) Attorney with experience with land use and gaming regulations. 2) Legislative Advocate to help develop effective strategies and materials in preparation for our discussion with elected officials.

Fairfax County Federation of Citizens’ Associations
The Fairfax County Federation of Citizens’ Associations (Federation) has posted their annual online survey requesting feedback on about a broad range of issues and is open to all Fairfax residents. Your answers allow the Federation to create an annual Legislative Package shared publicly with the Fairfax Delegation to the General Assembly in Richmond as well as the residents of Fairfax County. https://www.nbcnews.com/business/real-estate/high-housing-costs-minneapolis-solution-rcna170857 Minneapolis became the first major U.S. city to end single-family exclusive zoning in 2019, when it allowed multifamily buildings on former single-family lots. A Pew Research report noted that between 2017 and 2022, covering the beginnings of the Minneapolis 2040 plan, housing stock grew by 12% in the city, compared to 4% statewide.

- Elms Mt Vernon Project Gets Underway

A multi-family residential building is being built between Richmond Hwy and Buckman Rd in the Franconia District. The Elms Mt Vernon building is the first phase of the broader Mount Vernon Gateway project to develop a total of 17 acres between between Hybla Valley and South County that was approved in 2022. The 5.5-acre site is being redeveloped into a residential community with 280-unit luxury apartments and a parking garage.

The Zebra, Sept 2, 2024 Erik Johnson, a former leader of housing development in Connecticut, has been named the new CEO of the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority (ARHA).
